Women who are unhappy with the size of their breasts may want to consider breast augmentation. This surgery can be performed safely by board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Mohit Sood of Sood Center.
What Is a Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation involves placing implants in the breasts to increase their size and volume. The procedure normally takes between one and two hours, followed by a recovery period of up to two hours. It may be performed on an outpatient basis or may require an overnight stay in the hospital, depending on the circumstances.
Benefits of Breast Augmentation
There are several benefits to having a breast augmentation, including the following:
- Increasing fullness lost through pregnancy, weight loss, or aging
- Enhancing the self-esteem of women
- Providing a uniform appearance for women with uneven breasts
- Giving immediate results
How Is a Breast Augmentation Performed?
Since a breast augmentation is a major procedure, it is performed in a hospital setting under general anesthesia. Dr. Sood will make an incision in each breast so the implants can be placed. The exact location of this incision will depend on the type of implant you choose and the amount of breast tissue you have.
After making an incision, Dr. Sood will create a pocket for the implants. The pocket may be submuscular (underneath the pectoral muscle) or submammary (behind breast tissue and atop the pectoral muscle). Again, the location of the implant will depend on the type chosen.
Once the implant is in place, layered sutures are used to close breast tissue. The outer layer of skin is then sutured shut or closed with surgical tape.
Preparing for a Breast Augmentation
Prior to surgery, you may need to abstain from smoking or taking certain medications. Blood tests may also be ordered to ensure there are no complications from the anesthesia.
Recovery from Breast Augmentation
Following your procedure, you will be taken to a recovery room so your vital signs can be carefully monitored. Once the anesthesia has worn off, you will be released if undergoing outpatient surgery or taken to a hospital room if staying overnight. If being released, you will need someone else to drive you home from your appointment.
You will need to wear an elastic bandage for a period of time to help reduce swelling and speed healing. You should also have someone help you with household chores for the first two or three days. Strenuous activity should be limited for around four to six weeks; however, light activity such as walking is recommended.
Over-the-counter medication can help with any discomfort you feel after surgery. Dr. Sood will give you instructions on how to begin taking any medications you had previously stopped taking.
How Much Does a Breast Augmentation Cost?
Cost will depend on a number of factors, which is why it can be discussed only after undergoing a consultation. For your convenience, we accept checks, cash, major credit cards, and CareCredit® financing.
Is a Breast Augmentation Right for Me?
If you are extremely self-conscious about the size of your breasts, an augmentation could help you become more confident.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Breast Augmentation Increase the Chance of Developing Breast Cancer?
Many women shy away from getting breast augmentation because they fear it will increase their risk of breast cancer. However, numerous studies have proven that breast augmentation has no effect on women getting breast cancer. Furthermore, additional studies paired with research from the National Cancer Institute prove that breast augmentation in no way hinders the detection of breast tumors. Even if a woman does get breast cancer after having implants placed, she will still have the same remission rates as a woman without implants.
When Can Patients Exercise After Breast Augmentation?
Many patients are eager to get back to the gym after their breast augmentation. However, they will have to wait at least six weeks before returning to strenuous activity. This includes activities like lifting objects heavier than five pounds, jogging, biking, and other cardio. Furthermore, patients should avoid reaching their arms above their shoulders for the first one to two weeks.
If patients do not heed these directions, their implants can shift, creating a lopsided appearance. Additionally, the wound might not heal correctly, which could further alter the appearance of the breast.
Can Patients Still Breastfeed After Having Breast Augmentation?
In most cases, yes, it is still possible for women to breastfeed their babies after having breast augmentation. This is because Dr. Sood usually places the implant below the breast tissue in a way that does not interfere with the breast’s ability to produce milk. However, some specific placements can hinder a mother’s ability to breastfeed. For women with infants or women who are thinking of getting pregnant, Dr. Sood will discuss these issues in the initial consultation at his office.
Should Women Wait Until They Are Done Having Children for Breast Augmentation?
Because pregnancy can alter the shape and size of the breast, this may cause the implants to change in appearance. To preserve the appearance of the implants, Dr. Sood generally recommends women wait for breast augmentation until they are done having children. Otherwise, they will need to wait at least six months after the procedure if they plan on getting pregnant.
How Should Patients Choose Their New Size?
Breast augmentation gives patients the unique ability to choose the size of their breasts, and this is not a decision they should take lightly. Dr. Sood will work with every patient during the initial consultation at his offices to find the perfect size. The results are different in every patient based on natural breast tissue and nipple orientation. Dr. Sood can determine which implants are ideal based on the patient’s starting point and goals.
Is Breast Augmentation Good for Sagging Breasts?
Breast augmentation is not always the best treatment for sagging breasts. While breast augmentation can help provide some lift to smaller breasts, for larger or extremely saggy breasts, a breast lift surgery may be required.
Sood Center serves many plastic surgery needs, including breast lifts and breast augmentation. Dr. Sood will provide thorough recommendations for his patients before finalizing the treatment plan.
