Top surgery—also known as a type of gender reassignment surgery, transgender reassignment surgery, or gender confirmation surgery—is a procedure that either removes breasts to create a more traditionally masculine chest contour or builds breast mounds to create a curvier, bustier silhouette. Patients who are biologically male or female may choose this surgery if their physical characteristics don’t match the gender they want to portray to the world.
Top surgery can have psychological benefits, as well as help your preferred clothing to fit better.
After a thorough consultation and patient preparations, Dr. Sood will perform the appropriate procedure with precision and care.
For patients choosing female-to-male top surgery, he will remove the skin, fat, and other tissues that make up breast mounds on the chest, then sculpt the remaining tissue into the shape of more traditionally masculine contours. He will work to camouflage any incisions as much as possible in natural lines so that signs of the surgery are as unobtrusive as possible.
For patients choosing male-to-female top surgery, he will create breast mounds using implants, fat harvested from the patient’s own body, or a combination of the two. There are many variations on the techniques employed for this procedure, with details determined by the size of the implants, the patient’s build and body fat stores, the effects of hormones in the patient’s system, and more.
No matter the procedure specifics, expect your chest to feel sore in the days after the surgery. There will also be swelling and bruising. Once these side effects resolve, you will be better able to see your new chest contours. Be sure to follow all post-procedure care instructions we give you in order to minimize any scarring and risks of complications.
