Men can be plagued by overly large breasts due to weight gain, hormonal imbalances, or even certain medications. Gynecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction, is performed at Sood Center to help restore a more masculine appearance. Board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Mohit Sood puts patient safety and comfort first.

What Is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery is a procedure used to eliminate gynecomastia, which is the development of what appear to be female breasts in men. More than one method may be used to reduce male breasts, meaning this surgery is customized for each patient. It helps reduce the appearance of male breasts when diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes have proven ineffective.

Benefits of Gynecomastia Surgery

Men who suffer from gynecomastia often have low self-esteem and may avoid relationships with women. Having a male breast reduction can make you feel more masculine and allow you to participate in activities you may have avoided before such as swimming. It can also eliminate discomfort in the back, chest, and shoulders caused by heavy breasts that create a strain in these areas.

How Is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?

Two methods of reducing male breasts are used at Sood Center’s locations: liposuction and excision. Liposuction is most likely to be used when enlarged breasts are the result of fatty tissue, while excision is chosen when excess glandular tissue or skin is present.

Liposuction is performed under general anesthesia, which allows Dr. Sood to make several small incisions in the chest area. Once the area is numb, a small thin tube known as a cannula is then inserted beneath the skin so excess fat can be suctioned away. After the appropriate amount of fat has been removed, the incisions will be sewn shut.

The excision method is also performed under general anesthesia. Once it takes effect, a long incision will be made across the breast, or a series of incisions will be made around it. The type of incision will depend on the amount of skin and/or glandular tissue that must be removed. Excess tissue is removed, and then the incisions are closed with sutures. If a great deal of tissue has been removed, the nipple may be repositioned first.

Preparing for Gynecomastia Surgery

Prior to having gynecomastia surgery, you should do the following:

  • Have lab tests performed as recommended by Dr. Sood
  • Avoid smoking
  • Stop taking certain medications

Recovery from Gynecomastia Surgery

Your chest may be slightly swollen, but wearing a support garment can help reduce the amount of swelling. Medication may also be needed to help with the discomfort. Avoid strenuous activity for two to three weeks after having surgery to allow yourself plenty of time to heal.

How Much Does Gynecomastia Surgery Cost?

This is a personalized surgery performed somewhat differently on each patient. For this reason, we can provide you with an accurate cost only after undertaking a complete consultation with you. Sood Center accepts cash, checks, and credit cards, as well as financing with CareCredit®.

Is Gynecomastia Surgery Right for Me?

Men who experience gynecomastia often do not see improvement in their condition, even after losing weight or stopping certain medications. In these instances, the only way to permanently reduce the size of male breasts is through reduction surgery.

What to Expect During Your Gynecomastia Surgery Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Sood will attempt to determine the reason for gynecomastia in order to ensure you are a good candidate for surgery. He’ll also discuss your health history and any medications you are taking so he can assess the risk of complications. Your breasts may also be examined to see how much glandular, fatty, or skin tissue is present, as this will help him determine which surgical procedure would be suited for you.
