Not every woman is happy with her implants indefinitely. If you have breast implants and would like them removed, visit board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Mohit Sood at his clinics for care that puts your safety and comfort first.

What Is a Breast Implant Removal?

Breast implant removal involves reversing a breast augmentation by surgically removing silicone or saline implants. This procedure basically restores the breasts to their pre-augmentation condition, which might be needed due to health issues or because a woman is no longer satisfied with her appearance. A breast implant removal is typically performed as outpatient surgery and takes between one to two hours to complete.

Benefits of Breast Implant Removal

Breast implant removal can be done for a number of reasons and will, therefore, provide unique benefits for each patient, a few of which can include the following:

  • Eliminating back or neck problems caused by implants that are too large
  • Allowing patients to adjust the size of their breasts by inserting new implants that are smaller or larger
  • Switching from saline to silicone or vice versa
  • Removing implants that have ruptured or become damaged
  • Eliminating discomfort caused by capsular contracture, which involves scar tissue forming around the implant
  • Allowing a woman to change her mind and restore her figure to its previous proportions

How Is Breast Implant Removal Performed?

You will first be given sedation so your breast implants can be removed without discomfort. The incision will then be made along your original incision line if possible. Once the pocket holding the implant is exposed, Dr. Sood will perform an examination by placing one set of fingers inside the pocket and another on the outer breast to check for lumps or other abnormalities.

Your old implant will be removed, and then the pocket will be stitched firmly shut. If new implants are being added, they will be put in place, and the size of the pocket adjusted if needed.

In the event a silicone implant has ruptured, the gel will be removed before stitching the breast closed. This is done by applying a series of sponges, which allows the silicone to be absorbed completely. The process continues until no more gel is noticeable.

If removing an implant results in sagging breasts, a breast lift may be performed at the same time as an implant removal. In this case, excess skin from around your areola will be removed, and then the area will be stitched tightly to raise the breasts naturally.

Preparing for Breast Implant Removal

A mammogram is suggested just prior to breast implant removal to provide a basis for future tests. If having new implants inserted, you will need to limit your activities for a few days just as you did after receiving your original implants. In this instance, you should make arrangements to have someone help you perform household chores to avoid straining. Someone will be needed to drive you home from your appointment regardless of whether or not you are having new implants placed.

Recovery from Breast Implant Removal

You will spend approximately two hours in recovery being monitored for signs of complications from the anesthesia. Your breasts will also be wrapped with a pressure dressing, which should remain in place for around a week. You may feel some discomfort, so Dr. Sood will likely prescribe medication for you to take as needed.

Recovery time is much shorter for those who are simply having implants removed. In that instance, you may return to normal activities within a week. That time could be as long as four to six weeks if receiving new implants.

How Much Does Breast Implant Removal Cost?

A number of factors play a part in the cost. Dr. Sood will discuss your cost, in addition to payment options such as CareCredit® financing, major credit cards, and personal checks, during your initial consultation.

Is Breast Implant Removal Right for Me?

If you have health concerns because of your implants or are no longer satisfied with the way they make you look, having them removed can make you feel better physically and emotionally.
