What is Silagen for Scar Management?
Dr. Mohit Sood is very proud to now be able to offer his patients the convenience of the first and only comprehensive, physician-exclusive, all-day medical grade silicone scar management therapy regimen with two separate products, providing you with all-day scar management for both indoors and out.
As scars heal, they synthesize and release collagen, which is an important component in the healing process, but too much collagen production can subsequently lead to abnormal scarring. Furthermore, exposure to the sun can cause scars to darken in color, a process called hyperpigmentation. Fortunately, medical-grade silicone has been shown in clinical studies to normalize collagen and hydrate healing, and thus prevent hypertrophic scarring. And, by combining silicone in a non-irritating combination with zinc oxide, it can help to prevent UV-induced scar hyperpigmentation
Unlike sticky creams, silicone gel forms a thin, transparent sheet that dries quickly and adheres effectively to the scar tissue, in addition to maintaining its efficacy around contours and joints. Now, Dr. Sood is pleased to offer his patients both Silagen SPF30 and Silagen 100% Pure Silicone Gel, physician-exclusive treatments that give you an effective scar management therapy program that is right for your lifestyle, from morning to night, for both home and the office and out of doors as well. Both of these products are only available for sale at a doctor’s office, so contact Dr. Sood’s offices today to learn more.
Silagen 100% Pure Silicone Gel
Silicone treatment is the new standard of care in scar management, and Dr. Sood is pleased to offer to his Silagen 100% Pure Silicone Gel, the very finest medical-grade silicone, available only through a physician. For the first year of healing, a scar can tend to have high levels of water evaporation, which, in turn, can stimulate the production of collagen, leading to abnormal scarring. Over the course of several months of silicone treatment with Silagen 100% Pure Silicone Gel, your scar tissue collagen will be normalized, and abnormal scarring will be prevented. Because Silagen 100% Pure Silicone Gel adheres well to the skin and is also comfortably dry to the touch, it is much more convenient to use than sticky creams, not only for reasons of comfort and ease of use but also due to its ability to adhere much more consistently to contours and joints than other treatments.
Available in 15g and 30g quantities, Silagen 100% Pure Silicone Gel has a soft and silky feel, and yet it is also faster drying than any other silicone gel on the market. Silagen 100% Pure Silicone Gel provides the level of occlusion and hydration necessary to prevent your scar tissue from becoming excessive or abnormal, which, along with its quick-drying and medical grade silicone properties, is why Silagen 100% Pure Silicone Gel was preferred by 98% of physicians in a recent survey. Silagen SPF30
Silagen SPF30 combines the benefits of medical grade silicone scar therapeutics with natural UV resistant zinc oxide in a formula custom designed to reduce scarring, inflammation and irritation around scar tissue, while protecting your healing scar from the sun. It’s important to take care of your healing scar tissue all day long, both indoors and out, and Silagen SPF30 uses a special formula with no chemical sunscreens designed to provide extra sun protection for sensitive scar tissue, as well as blocking and reducing the effects of hyperpigmentation, or excessively dark coloring of a scar tissue region exposed to the sun.
Ideal for exposed areas such as the face, neck, chest, arms, and hands, Dr. Sood recommends Silagen SPF30 for the following reasons:
- Silagen SPF30 is perfectly designed for exposed areas of the body, including the face, chest, and head, as well as the arms, hands and other parts that can be damaged by the sun.
- Silagen SPF30 uses zinc oxide to protect the skin against UV rays, unlike other formulas that rely on toxic and potentially harmful chemical ingredients.
- Because Silagen SPF30 is natural and contains no fragrances or odors it is both non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic, so it won’t irritate your skin or cause zits, irritations, and breakouts
- Silagen SPF30 uses the finest medical-grade silicone.
- Silagen SPF30 is physician
Silagen SPF30 has rapidly become the gold standard for prevention and treatment of scar tissue during the daytime when your extremities are exposed to the sun’s harmful UV rays. Once applied, the Silagen SPF30 begins to work to prevent evaporative water loss in the affected region, effectively sealing in the area. This action signals to your body to stop producing keratinocytes, which, in turn, stimulates a more normalized production of collagen. This process is extremely important because it is the body’s ramped up production of collagen that ultimately can lead to a thickening agglomeration of built-up scar tissue, and, in clinical trials, medical grade silicone has been shown to provide a level of occlusion that far exceeds what other therapeutic remedies are able to deliver.
Sunscreen Recommendation for Scars
Dr. Sood advises all of his patients to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and always to use an advanced sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more on any scar tissue that isn’t covered or hidden by clothing and can be affected by the sun. For his patients with healing scar tissue, he recommends Silagen SPF30, combined with a barrier-type sunscreen for the rest of your body, and to always follow the manufacturer’s application directions when using the product.
Why You Should Use Sunscreen on Scars
While we may think of scars as ugly or damaged tissue, the body considers scar tissue to be a new, fresh and fragile layer of skin. If you don’t protect yourself using an adequate sunscreen, it is likely that the skin on the scar tissue will become much darker much more quickly than the rest of your body; a process known as “hyperpigmentation”, which is the excessive dark coloration of scar tissue in particular areas. The first year of healing for a scar is when medical grade silicon has its most crucial effects, and Dr. Sood advises that it will take up to a year before scar tissue will tan and react equally alongside the rest of your skin.
Dr. Sood also reminds you that it is important to massage scarred tissue frequently so that the underlying skin can move, stretch, and expand freely. Using your fingers, rub your scar tissue in a circular motion using firm pressure for about five minutes a day, repeating the procedure 3 to 4 times per day. Dr. Sood recommends that patients begin massaging the scar tissue as soon as the incision is properly healed and can handle the pressure of touching it, which usually happens in about 2 to 3 days following your surgery. Dr. Sood recommends using a good moisturizing lotion with special emollients such as aloe and Vitamin E in order to allow the skin to become more supple, smooth and elastic around the scar area, and to prevent friction and chafing at the edges.
Preventing Hyperpigmentation of Scars
Dr. Sood has experience working with scars and scar tissue and knows that prolonged or continued inflammation and irritation can lead to permanent and exacerbated scar tissue. Although all post-operative patients are similarly facing a risk of hyperpigmentation, exposed scar tissue is especially sensitive to becoming much darker than the surrounding tissue, which will only get worse if left untreated. Unfortunately, Dr. Sood has seen unprotected sun exposure cause severe damage to scars that are just two weeks old; witnessing how the color, size, and cosmetic impression continued to worsen without protection. This is why Dr. Sood is so insistent about his patients following all post-operative care instructions and, in particular, the importance of protecting fragile tissue from UV damage caused by the sun.
Why Medical Grade Silicone Scar Therapies
It has been clinically shown that the magnitude of occlusion from silicone treatment far exceeds other therapies’ abilities to normalize collagen during a scar tissue’s healing process. Silagen SPF30 and Silagen 100% Pure Silicone Gel deliver medical grade silicon properties directly to your scar region, day and night, providing occlusion and hydration of the stratum corneum of your scar, along with protection from the sun, and all the while offering you a maximum level of convenience so that you can worry less about scar management and more about enjoying your life.
