What Are Chemical Peels?
Chemical peels involve the use of a chemical solution to exfoliate dead skin cells and “resurface” the skin to give it a more vibrant, youthful appearance. Since it removes damaged outer layers of skin, it is useful at treating a number of skin-related disorders, including the following:
- Acne
- Fine lines and minor wrinkles
- Liver spots
- Photodamage
- Rough or scaly patches of skin
- Scars, especially those caused by acne
- Uneven pigmentation
Chemical peels may be classified as light, medium, or deep, depending on how many layers of skin they are designed to remove. Light chemical peels remove only the outer layer of skin, while medium and deep peels remove multiple layers. Light peels can also be performed on a more frequent basis since they remove only the top layer of skin that quickly rejuvenates itself.
One of the most popular chemical peels amongst patients is Obagi® Blue. Produced by Obagi® Medical, this particular peel must be performed by a licensed provider because of its intense formula that provides deep, long-lasting results. Obagi® Blue is one of the most effective peels for improving the texture and tone of the skin. Normally, three separate treatments are given at two-week intervals for maximum benefits.
Benefits of Chemical Peels
Numerous benefits of chemical peels include the following:
- Ability to treat multiple skin conditions
- Convenience, in that they can be performed in our MedSpa in a relatively short amount of time
- Safe when used as directed
How Are Chemical Peels Performed?
One of our skin care specialists will prepare your skin by washing it thoroughly with an antiseptic cleanser. Next, a chemical solution will be applied to your face using a soft cloth or applicator brush and allowed to sit for five to ten minutes. After that time, it is washed off; a neutralizing agent, ointment, or moisturizer may be added to speed healing if needed. You may then return to normal activities, provided you protect your face from exposure to direct sunlight.
Preparing for a Chemical Peel
Before coming in for a chemical peel, you should avoid sun exposure, since chemical peels cannot be performed on damaged skin. You should also forego wearing makeup on the day of your appointment as well.
Recovery from a Chemical Peel
The most common side effect noticed after a chemical peel involves a condition similar to a sunburn. Swelling and blisters may also be present after a medium or deep peel. Avoid sun exposure and keep your skin well hydrated to minimize the discomfort you feel. You may need to limit your use of cosmetics as well.
How Much Does a Chemical Peel Cost?
Cost will depend on the type of peel you choose. We will give you a breakdown of the cost during your consultation. Dr. Sood accepts cash, checks, and credit cards, as well as financing with CareCredit®.
Is a Chemical Peel Right for Me?
If you have more than one skin problem you would like to address yet do not wish to undergo surgery, a chemical peel could be an excellent option for you to consider.
