The goal of buccal fat removal is to thin the cheeks and give a more contoured appearance. Although a face that is naturally soft and filled out is considered youthful, it can address concerns for patients who feel too full or have chubby cheeks. It is performed by a making a small incision inside the mouth on each cheek and removing some fat pads. There are no incisions on the outer skin layers and therefore this surgery leaves no scar. Depending on the method used, you may have a few small absorbable sutures placed inside the cheek.
Who is a good candidate for this procedure?
Buccal fat removal treats a very specific concern. The procedure helps define the jawline and cheek contours without the problems of volume overload. The procedure is suited for patients who have “fat cheeks” or a fuller face than desired. The common phrase patients use to describe their concern is “chipmunk cheeks”. If someone has a very thin face, or most of their issues are related to the fat layer just below the skin (subcutaneous fat), this may not be the best treatment option. As with all cosmetic and elective surgeries, a good candidate is a non-smoker, healthy, and has realistic expectations. What about recovery?
Patients can expect moderate cheek soreness and possibly discomfort while chewing for a few days. You might notice an increase in cheek fullness as normal swelling from surgery. This swelling subsides and after a couple of weeks you can start to see the changes in cheek contour. The swelling will increase and decrease with activity and rest but will generally subside at about the 3 months mark when healing from surgery is mostly complete. As with all surgical procedures, plan appropriately with any upcoming special occasions.
