Many people feel that they can’t achieve a flat stomach no matter how hard they work at it. The good news is that a tummy tuck performed by board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Mohit Sood can give you a desirably flat tummy.

What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck is also known as an abdominoplasty. This procedure takes out excess skin and fat to give the tummy a toned, flat appearance. The surgery can also restore muscles in the abdomen that have become separated or weak.

What are the Benefits of a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck procedure is frequently performed on patients who have loose skin after significant weight loss. The tummy tuck will help take out the loose skin and reduce the size of the stomach. Swiss research teams found that bariatric surgery patients who underwent tummy tucks had a higher incidence of keeping off the weight they’d lost.

Other benefits include:

  • Enhanced self-esteem.
  • A more toned and tightened appearance.
  • Can be done in combination with other procedures, including hernia operations.

How is a Tummy Tuck Performed?

This surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis in the office of Dr. Sood unless it is being done in combination with other procedures. In that case, the surgery would take place in a hospital.

Patients will usually be given local anesthesia if they are in the office setting. In a hospital, a patient would likely have general anesthesia. Once the patient is sedated, Dr. Sood will put in a horizontal incision. This will begin under the belly button and move down towards the patient’s pubic area. The skin will then be lifted to provide access to the abdominal muscles.

The skin from the upper abdomen will be pulled down and trimmed before it is sewn back together. The belly button must be repositioned as part of the procedure. Once the belly button is restored, the other skin can be sewn back together, and the patient’s wounds will be covered with gauze to aid the healing.
