Many people feel that a flat stomach just isn’t achievable. Residents of Middle Township, N.J. have the option of undergoing tummy tuck surgery to help achieve that flat appearance. Board-certified South Jersey plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Mohit Sood is an expert in cosmetic procedures, including tummy tucks that help patients achieve a flatter, smoother abdomen.

What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck is also known as an abdominoplasty. This procedure takes out extra fat and skin and gives the stomach a more toned, flatter look. The procedure can also restore muscles in the abdomen that have become weak or that have separated.

What are The Benefits of Having a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck procedure is often chosen by those who have had significant weight loss. The procedure helps take out loose skin and reduces the size of the stomach. In a study by Swiss researchers, bariatric patients who have undergone tummy tucks are more likely to keep off the weight they have lost. Other benefits to the surgery include:

  • It can be combined safely with other procedures, including hernia surgery
  • Enhanced self-esteem and confidence
  • Tightened look to the abdomen and a more toned appearance

How Will a Tummy Tuck Be Performed?

A tummy tuck will most usually be done in the office. This would be an outpatient procedure unless another surgery is scheduled for the same time. In that case, the surgery would be performed in a hospital.

Office patients are usually given local anesthesia, whereas those having the surgery in a hospital would be given general anesthesia. Once the patient has been sedated, Dr. Sood makes an incision in a horizontal direction, starting in the area under the belly button and then moving down toward the pubic area. He then lifts up the skin to gain access to the abdominal muscles and makes any repairs that are needed.

The skin from the upper abdominal region is pulled down and trimmed off before being sewn back together. This requires that the belly button be placed back and repositioned. Once this is done, the outer skin is reattached and sewn. The wounds are then covered over with gauze to promote healing.

After recovery, the patient can enjoy a flatter and more toned look.
