Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers and is also one of the easiest to treat when caught early. Board-certified New Jersey plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Mohit Sood treats skin cancer patients with dignity and compassion at his Haddonfield and Linwood clinics.
What Is Skin Cancer?
Skin cancer involves the formation of abnormal cells in the dermis (inner layer of skin) that may eventually spread to the epidermis (outer layer of skin). Some signs of skin cancer include the following:
- Unusual moles that change significantly in size, shape, or color
- Sores that do not heal
- Raised patches of skin that are firm or crusty and scaly
These signs do not necessarily indicate cancer; however, if you are experiencing any of them, you should nonetheless be examined to rule out the possibility. If cancer is discovered, it can be treated in multiple ways through surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or medication. The type of skin cancer treatment performed at our clinic involves surgery to remove malignant cells and any surrounding tissue that may have been affected as a result.
Benefits of Skin Cancer Treatment
When performed early on, skin cancer treatment has a very high success rate. In addition, many surgeries to remove skin cancer can be performed in our office on an outpatient basis. Insurance may cover all or most of the cost.
How Is Skin Cancer Treatment Performed?
The exact procedure may vary from one patient to the next, but it generally involves using local anesthesia to numb the area being worked on. Next, the tumor is cut away and the remaining wound sewn shut. Removed tissue may also be examined underneath a microscope, which will allow Dr. Sood to make sure no cancer cells remain.
Preparing for Skin Cancer Treatment
New Jersey patients will need to refrain from smoking and taking blood-thinning medications prior to surgery. They should also avoid exposing the area to extreme sunlight or harsh chemicals.
Skin Cancer Treatment Recovery
The area operated on may feel slightly numb from anesthesia immediately after surgery. This normally goes away within one to two hours. Your wound will also be bandaged closed, and you will be given instructions on how to care for this wound. Dr. Sood will arrange a follow-up appointment to check your progress. Be sure to attend this appointment, as it might be necessary to give you further instructions for treatment at that time.
How Much Does Skin Cancer Treatment Cost?
The size and depth of the tumor, its’ placement on your body, and other factors will all play a part in your cost. Skin cancer treatment is usually covered by most insurance plans, and we will work with your insurance company to get you the benefits you are entitled to. We’ll also help you establish a plan for paying any remaining balance not covered by insurance. For your convenience, we accept cash, checks, major credit cards, and CareCredit® financing.
Is Skin Cancer Treatment Right for Me?
Patients from New Jersey and the greater Philadelphia area who have been diagnosed with skin cancer or have an unusual lesion on the body that needs examining should not hesitate to seek treatment from Dr. Sood. While skin cancer is easily treated, it can also become deadly if you delay seeking medical care.
Why Choose Dr. Mohit Sood for Skin Cancer Treatment?
Dr. Sood’s extensive knowledge of the skin ensures you will receive top-notch medical care from start to finish. He is also concerned with putting New Jersey patients first. Should you need reconstructive surgery after skin cancer treatment, Dr. Sood can help with that as well.
What to Expect During Your Skin Cancer Treatment Consultation
The area(s) in question will be looked at carefully. Measurements and photographs may also be taken. In some cases, Dr. Sood may want to perform a biopsy, which involves the removal of a small amount of tissue for laboratory testing. He may also recommend lab work based on the health history you provide.
