Rhinoplasty in South Jersey
Having an unusually large or oddly shaped nose can affect your self-esteem and may even cause breathing problems. Board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Mohit Sood can provide exceptional results for his South Jersey patients who are unhappy with the way their nose looks.
What Is Rhinoplasty?
More commonly thought of as a “nose job,” rhinoplasty is a surgery performed to adjust the size or shape of the nose to present a more pleasant appearance. It is sometimes performed to reconstruct a nose that has been severely damaged due to disease or illness. Rhinoplasty can also be used to correct breathing problems or heal nasal fractures.
Benefits of Rhinoplasty
Multiple techniques are used in rhinoplasty, allowing Dr. Sood great leeway when it comes to resizing and reshaping the nose. As such, this surgery has both cosmetic and medical benefits. Those who have it done for medical reasons report better breathing with less discomfort, allowing them to perform strenuous activities they may not have been able to do before.
How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?
Rhinoplasty is performed under either general or local anesthesia yet is usually considered an outpatient procedure. An anesthesiologist will remain in the operating room to monitor your vital signs during surgery. You may also be given oxygen if needed.
This operation may be either an open or closed procedure. In an open procedure, an incision is made between the nostrils, while a closed procedure involves an incision inside the nose. The exact incision will depend on the type of reconstruction needed. After making the incisions, Dr. Sood may do the following:
- Remove bone and cartilage
- Add cartilage to certain areas
- Straighten a deviated septum
Once the necessary adjustments have been made, the incisions will be closed with stitches. Stitches may also be placed inside the nostrils to make them smaller if doing so would cause them to be more proportionate to the new nose. Splints and gauze packs are added during the final stages of surgery to help prevent infection while the nose is healing.
Preparing for Rhinoplasty
Prior to rhinoplasty, you should do the following:
- Have certain lab work performed
- Review your medical history with Dr. Sood
- Discuss any medications you are currently taking
- Advise medical staff of any breathing disorders or allergies
- Stop smoking
- Refrain from eating or drinking up to six hours before receiving anesthesia
Recovery from Rhinoplasty
You should strictly limit your activity for two to three weeks after surgery. Bed rest is also required for up to a week afterward. While on bed rest, you should keep your head fully elevated using two or three firm pillows. If bruising or swelling is present, apply ice packs and take over-the-counter medication to help with the discomfort. Nosebleeds are common; change the gauze dressing whenever it becomes saturated. This may be required hourly in the first 24 hours after your operation.
How Much Does Rhinoplasty Cost?
The extent of restoration needed will affect your cost, which will be provided for you during your consultation. For your convenience, we accept checks, cash, major credit cards, and CareCredit® financing.
The cost of rhinoplasty is sometimes covered by insurance. Our staff will determine what, if any, benefits are available and then come up with a plan to help you pay any remaining balance.
