The face is the first area to show signs of aging, which is why facelifts continue to be popular. Board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Mohit Sood offers facelifts to help patients restore a more youthful look while prioritizing their safety and comfort.
What Is a Facelift?
A facelift is a procedure designed to help patients remove fine lines and wrinkles and tighten sagging skin in the face and neck. It can rectify many signs of aging, including creases underneath the eyes, laugh lines, and the appearance of jowls. A facelift is not intended to tighten all areas of the face and neck, which is why it is sometimes performed in conjunction with eyelid surgery or a brow lift.
Benefits of a Facelift
Patients choose facelifts because they want to appear younger. A facelift may slow the aging process somewhat since the skin will have a firmer base. Advances in technology have made it possible for facelifts to be performed with lasers or endoscopic cameras, thereby enhancing results and speeding recovery time.
How Is a Facelift Performed?
This procedure may be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the exact technique being used and the amount of skin to be removed. In a traditional facelift, an incision is made beginning in front of each ear and extending upwards behind the ear and into the hairline. Excess skin is then removed, and the remaining skin is tightened by pulling it taut and securing it with stitches.
A laser procedure requires only a one-inch incision underneath the chin. Excess skin is pulled downward, then tightened and secured as in a traditional facelift. An endoscopic procedure results in several incisions that are placed in the scalp, under the eyelids, in the mouth, and above each ear. A tiny camera is then inserted into each incision so that the tissue, fat, and muscle can be separated and then lifted from the bone to present a firmer, more youthful appearance.
Preparing for a Facelift
Prior to having a facelift, you should do the following:
- Stop smoking, as tobacco use can interfere with the healing process
- Refrain from taking blood-thinning medications, including aspirin, that might lead to surgical complications
- Avoid sun exposure, and sun damage to the skin could affect the results of the facelift
On the day of your appointment, you should wash your face and neck thoroughly with a mild antibiotic soap. Avoid wearing lotions, perfumes, or cosmetics just prior to surgery. Remove contacts, and bring a pair of prescription glasses to wear once your surgery is completed.
Recovery from a Facelift
Tenderness, bruising, and swelling are all normal side effects of a facelift and can persist for up to two weeks. During this time, apply ice and take over-the-counter medications to help with any discomfort. You should also avoid using harsh cleansers on your skin and wear a hat and sunglasses to shield you from the sun.
How Much Does a Facelift Cost?
The exact procedure used and the amount of skin being removed will all play a part in how much a facelift costs. For this reason, we will discuss cost and payment options such as credit cards, checks, and CareCredit® Financing with you during your consultation.
Is a Facelift Right for Me?
A facelift provides one of the most dramatic results of any cosmetic procedure. It also provides long-lasting results that can be noticeable for up to ten years. If you’re after a long-lasting, dramatic change, a facelift could be an excellent choice for you.
