Women who are unhappy with the size of their breasts may want to consider a breast augmentation. This surgery can be performed safely by board-certified South Jersey plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Mohit Sood of The Sood Center in Linwood, New Jersey.

What Is a Breast Augmentation?

A breast augmentation involves placing implants in the breasts to increase their size and volume. The procedure normally takes between one and two hours, followed by a recovery period of up to two hours. It may be performed on an outpatient basis or may require an overnight stay in the hospital, depending on the circumstances.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

There are several benefits to having a breast augmentation, including the following:

  • Increasing fullness lost through pregnancy, weight loss, or aging
  • Enhancing self-esteem
  • Providing a more uniform appearance for South Jersey women with uneven breasts
  • Providing immediate results

How Is a Breast Augmentation Performed?

Since a breast augmentation is a major procedure, it is performed in a hospital setting under general anesthesia. Dr. Sood will make an incision in each breast so the implants can be placed. The exact location of this incision will depend on the type of implant you choose and the amount of breast tissue you have.

After making an incision, Dr. Sood will create a pocket for the implants. The pocket may be submuscular (underneath the pectoral muscle) or submammary (behind breast tissue and atop the pectoral muscle). Again, the location of the implant will depend on the type chosen.

Once the implant is in place, layered sutures are used to close breast tissue. The outer layer of skin is then sutured shut or closed with surgical tape.

Preparing for a Breast Augmentation

Prior to surgery, you may need to abstain from smoking or taking certain medications. Blood tests may also be ordered to ensure there are no complications from the anesthesia.

Recovery from Breast Augmentation

Following your procedure, you will be taken to a recovery room so your vital signs can be carefully monitored. Once the anesthesia has worn off, you will be released if undergoing outpatient surgery or taken to a hospital room if staying overnight. If being released, you will need someone else to drive you home from your appointment.

You will need to wear an elastic bandage for a period of time to help reduce swelling and speed healing. You should also have someone help you with household chores for the first two or three days. Strenuous activity should be limited for around four to six weeks; however, light activity such as walking is recommended.

Over-the-counter medication can help with any discomfort you feel after surgery. Dr. Sood will give you instructions on how to begin taking any medications you had previously stopped taking.

How Much Does a Breast Augmentation Cost?

Cost will depend on a number of factors, which is why it can be discussed only after undergoing a consultation. For your convenience, we accept checks, cash, major credit cards, and CareCredit® financing.
