Women who are displeased with their breast size may consider undergoing breast enhancement surgery. For those who are considering breast augmentation, board-certified plastic and reconstruction surgeon Dr. Mohit Sood and his team at Sood Center can help you achieve your desired look.

What Is a Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation consists of placing implants within the breasts in order to enhance their size. The procedure can be done either as an outpatient or as an inpatient. If a hospital stay is required, it’s typically for no more than a 24-hour period. The procedure itself lasts between one to two hours, with a recovery time of approximately two hours.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

There are many benefits that have been attributed to breast augmentation, including:

  • Improving your self-esteem.
  • Giving the breasts a more symmetrical appearance.
  • Increasing breast fullness that may have been lost due to age, weight loss or pregnancy.

How Is a Breast Augmentation Performed?

Since a breast augmentation is a major surgery, general anesthesia is required, and the procedure must be performed in a hospital. The surgeon makes an incision within each of the breasts in order to insert the implant. The size and location of the incision will depend largely on the type of implant that is being used.

Once the incision has been made, the surgeon creates a pocket in the breast where the implant will be placed. The pocket will either be located under the pectoral muscle or behind the breast tissue and on top of the pectoral muscle itself. Whether the implant is submuscular or submammary will also depend on the implant type that is selected.

After the implant is placed in the pocket, sutures are layered on top until the breast tissue is closed. The skin is then sutured or secured using surgical tape.
